The Surabaya Zoo has come a long way. It was established back on 1916, August 31st. It was established by decree of the Governor General of the Netherlands East Indies. It was not originally located where it is now located. It was first situated in Kaliondo. Only one year later, the zoo was then relocated to a new place, which was the Groedo Road. It was opened to the public in 1998. Ever since, visitors are required to buy tickets before entering the area. It was relocated again in 1920. The new location was in Darmo Area. It was not until July 1922, it dealt with its first crisis. The manager even considered to shut it down. However, some parties disagreed with the proposal and wanted to keep going despite the crisis.

It got another chance to rise after Dijkerman as the Mayor Of Surabaya decided to help by funding for the zoo. The zoo has an area of 15 hectares until today. It does have a long history. There are many things going on throughout the development of the zoo. Some parts of the zoo have been revamped to improve quality. For instance, the breeding facility was repaired in 1987. 29 aviaries and 16 Bali starlings were added. The collection of animals owned by the zoo has increase over time, especially after it has received a donation of 37 birds from the USA.

There are some other parties who have contributed to enrich the collection. There was a success story of how the zookeepers bred starlings. 40 of them were finally released into the wild. There is also a grim story surrounding the zoo. International media criticized the zoo for neglecting some of its animals. There were photos of animals surfacing, showing how they suffered from skin diseases and hunger. Hopefully, they can get their act together and help those poor animals out of their miserable conditions.
